5 Tips To Handle Your Groceries & Food Deliveries During The Pandemic

As the trend shifts to online shopping from grocery to other daily necessities during the pandemic, we are faced with many dilemmas when it comes to package and delivery handling. Many sources have said that coronavirus may live up to days on surfaces, which raise concerns for boxes, plastics, containers and more.

5 tips to handle your groceries during the pandemic

Here, we’ll share some tips on how to handle your groceries and other delivers for your peace of mind:

1. Know Your Risk

According to The World Health Organisation (WHO), the likelihood of an infected person contaminating goods is low, as is the risk of catching COVID-19 from a package that has been moved, traveled, and exposed to different conditions and temperatures.

It’s also important to know that the UK Government’s website states that “ it’s very unlikely” to catch coronavirus from food. It’s a respiratory illness and is not known to be transmitted by exposure to food or food packaging.

2. Stay Contactless

The most important thing about all deliveries handling is the method of receiving your items. Always opt for contactless delivery, which means that the person who delivers your items may leave the packages on the outside of your house while you wait at least 2 meters away. Mask is also encouraged. If possible, try to settle with cashless payment prior to delivery so you minimize the chance of having to stay close to other people and lower the risk of infection.

3. Extra Precautions

The FDA recently reiterated guidelines and shared some reassuring news about packaging transmission, confirming that there is a very low risk of the virus being transmitted nor is there any evidence thus far that shows the possibility of infection from food packaging.

This being said, there is no longer the need to wipe down everything excessively. Instead, you may leave your groceries out for 24 hours or simply wipe/ wash as necessary. If you cannot do any of those, do not worry, put the groceries away and wash your hands immediately.

4. Fruits & Vegetables

When it comes to fresh produce, such as fruits and vegetables, do not use products containing any chemicals to clean them. If you are anxious and would like to give them a wash, choose food-grade soap and run a quick rinse then allow to airdry. You may also remove the outermost leaves of the vegetables such as cabbage or lettuce. Or as you normally would, wash all fresh produce under running water before cutting and cooking.

When you order food to enjoy at home, it’s recommended to transfer your food to a plate using eating utensils. This is great not only to make sure you’re eating comfortably, but minimize material exposure to your food too ( for example : paper or plastic box). Throw away the container. Heat the food if you wish, and always wash your hands before eating.
