The Do’s & Don’ts Of Good Eating Habits
Good nutrition is an important part of a healthy lifestyle and your overall well being. Unfortunately, obesity as well as other health risks are on the rise while the access to healthy foods is often paved with challenges. More often than not, we give in to the temptation and bad food choices, just because of the lack of knowledge, will, or out of habit.
The good news is, it’s never too late to start eating healthy and it can be as simple as being more mindful with your choices. To begin, check out our do’s and don’ts of good eating habits that you can start to apply today :
1. Do : Try to eat more unprocessed foods
When you have a goal to eat healthy, fresh ingredients should top your to-eat list. Choose to use vegetables, eggs, milk, lean meat- all fresh and natural produce that are free of preservatives, chemical substance, sweetener or artificial colors. Avoiding these harmful elements is essential to maintain good health, while also enjoying the real flavors of your food. Also, make sure to include lots of fresh fruits, nuts and legumes in your daily diet.
2. Don’t : Limit or deprive yourself of certain food groups
Different types of diet may sometimes eliminate certain food groups, such as no carbs, no fats etc. Ideally, a good serving of all food groups should be included for a varied and well balanced diet. While it is not necessary to eat all five food groups in one serving, try to include some of the foods in each group a couple of times a week. This way, you can get the key nutrients that they provide for your health.
3. Do : Limit saturated fats
Try to minimise your intake of food containing saturated fats as this can lead to the accumulation of weight in different parts of your body. Consume fats in moderation or you can also switch to a healthy or low-fat version, such as lean meat, skimmed milk, or reduced-fat products.
4. Don’t : Forget about moderation
Eating in moderation means to avoid excessive amounts of calories or any particular or nutrient. You want to have a good spread of everything that is calculated based on your personal needs or recommended serving.
Generally, the recommended daily calorie intake is 2,000 calories a day for women and 2,500 for men. Get familiar with portion control and variety, this will really help you maintain a healthy attitude towards foods.
5. Do : Drink Plenty of Water
It is scientifically proven that drinking enough water holds many health benefits for our bodies. From maintaining the balance of your body fluids, keep sickness at bay, control calories, energize muscles and more, water is essential to our health.
6. Don’t : Give Up!
Healthy eating is a learning process for everyone. If you happen to make a mistake, don’t feel disappointed and continue with choosing junk food over healthy ones. Remember that it’s about small steps that will accumulate into what truly matters, your health.
