Malibu was created specifically for the purpose of simplifying the creation of Pina Coladas. And, the product wasn’t always what it is today. Originally, Malibu was made from fruit spirits, coconut flavoring and rum, mixed with Curacao. Production of the concoction was moved to Barbados later, where the rum used is also made. And after the brand was bought from Diageo, now the West indies Rum Distillery owns both the rum, and the Malibu brand!
As time went on, catchy marketing allowed it to gain more notoriety. The company joked that if people in the Caribbean took life as seriously as people in the western world, then Malibu Rum would never have been invented.
